Mental wellbeing, day to day

The basics

Medicines for mental health do not change who you are. In plain terms, they gently rebalance some of the chemistry in the brain so that it is easier to feel more like yourself again.

They usually take time. It is common for them to take around two to six weeks to make a real difference, and sometimes a little longer. That waiting stretch can feel discouraging, but it does not mean the medicine is not working.

Whatever you are taking, it works best as one part of a bigger picture, alongside talking therapies like counselling or CBT and the everyday things that support wellbeing. Medicine gives many people the steadiness they need to do the rest.

Your medicines

There are a few common kinds. Here's what they broadly do. This is general information; your GP or mental health team chooses what's right for you.

Medicine typeWhat it broadly does
AntidepressantsUsed for low mood, depression and often for anxiety too. They can lift the heavy, flat feeling and help you cope day to day.
Anti-anxiety medicinesHelp ease worry, tension and physical symptoms of anxiety. Some are for short-term use, others for longer.
Mood stabilisersHelp even out the big swings in mood that some people experience.

Never start, stop or change a mental health medicine without your GP or prescriber. When the time is right, these medicines usually need to be reduced gradually.

Staying well day to day

Medicine works best when the everyday basics are looked after too. None of this is about doing it perfectly; small, kind steps count.

  • Sleep. A regular sleep routine steadies mood more than almost anything else. Gentle wind-downs help.
  • Activity. Even a short walk outside can lift how you feel. Movement is genuinely good medicine for the mind.
  • Connection. Staying in touch with even one person you trust makes a real difference. You do not have to carry things alone.
  • Routine. Simple anchors to the day, like meals, a walk and taking your medicine at the same time, give a comforting sense of steadiness.

⚠️ Know the warning signs

Never stop an antidepressant abruptly, as doing so can cause unpleasant withdrawal effects and bring symptoms back. When you and your prescriber decide the time is right, ask about reducing it gradually. Occasionally, especially early on, mood or anxiety can dip before it lifts; if you feel worse, more agitated, or have any thoughts of harming yourself, contact your GP promptly. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, you are not alone and help is available right now. Call your GP or NHS 111 for urgent help, or Samaritans free, anytime, on 116 123. In an emergency, call 999.

PillPal supports your routine. It doesn't replace medical advice. Always follow your GP or GP or mental health team's instructions. For urgent advice call NHS 111; in an emergency call 999.
